Week 2
This is where you will find the notes, information, links and ramblings for Week 2 of the MOOC
Social Learning
Week 2 Emerging Trends & Technologies in the Virtual Classroom K12
NB., What I like about this MOOC than another is the format and layout of the MOOC. IT is by far the easiest to navigate and follow because of the ROADMAP that is attached to the left hand OPTIONS not the main page. The course is outlined clearly and absolute with its expectations of what we need to do during the week…
For Example Week 2 (it was so easy to pick up where I left off last week)
Roadmap of Week 2: Social Learning
• social learning theories • selecting the right tools • social media
Read Weekly Instructor Announcement
Watch Video Lectures for Module 2
Participate in Discussion Forums
Network with Your Classmates
Participate in the live Twitter chats on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 6pm PST and Friday, November 22, 2013 at 8 am PST
Refer to Power Point Slides (linked on Module Lectures page-see picture icon)
Explore Weekly Resources
Begin brainstorming ideas for the Peer-assessed Assignment
Take Quiz 2
Each week it commences with LESSON OUTCOMES (only 2 each time)
WEEK 2
Evaluate the broader use of social technologies for use in the virtual classroom
Discuss carious lesson strategies for using social technologies effectively & efficiently
This week we will be exploring how social technologies can be used to support highly engaging and successful virtual learning activities.
Social Technologies
Social Network & Sharing
Facebook,YOUTube, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, Slideshare, Vimeo, EDMODO
Blogs & Wiki's
Blogger, Word Press, Wikispace, Tumblr, Weebly
Commonality is that we use each of these to engage other people and ask them to share comments and ideas… posting comments.
When to USE/NOT USE Social Technologies (EFFECTIVENESS & EFFICIENCY)
TO USE
You have used it (personally or professional)
You are fluent in its PRIVACY
You have already established the LEARNING OBJECTIVE by using the particular technology - it is important that it is MEASURABLE, CENTRES ON SOCIAL SHARING & DISCOURSE
Age appropriate
Have EXAMPLES of GOOD USE (i.e., setting the parameters within the context of the lesson)
TIME LINE IT! (have explicit outcomes and also within a time limit)
TO NOT USE
Forcing students to make public if there is discomfort in doing so
Do not mix SOCIAL & ACADEMIC (i.e FACEBOOK)
Cross device accessibility
Distraction of the learning objective
IS ENGAGEMENT ENOUGH?
Effectiveness?
Social Technologies is MORE than TEXT
IMages
Video
Presentations
Collaboration
Social Technologies with camera functions
SOCIAL TECHNOLOGIES OFTEN ENCOURAGE CREATIVITY, PERSONALISATION & REFLECTION… plan accordingly! :-)
Efficiency?
U do not have to comment on everything … BE RESPONSIVE and SUPPORTIVE for newbies
It's about the community interacting and you FACILITATING the learning
Crowdsourcing Support is about helping one another - i.e., in one MOOC of over 20K students - some students (LOTE) required subtitles for the HANGOUT (1hr in length) to understand completely what was being taught… so instead of having 1 person trying to dictate the speaking into a text format - they had 30 people do 2 minutes each… and then it was uploaded to the recording of the HANGOUT… (I thought that this was a brilliant use of the masses!)
Separating Accounts because it will be much cleaner for your own accountability
FREQUENT, SHORT DURATIONS of Visibility
Subscribe, Filter & Aggregate to manage the technology

TWITTER
1/6 TWITTER
Basics… Definition www.twitter.com - Social networking and microblogging service utilising instant messaging, SMS or a web interface.
Privacy - you can control
Style - 150 characters
Pace - IT IS QUICK! lol
Good for -
Exploring
Quick Comments
Virtual Learning Commentary
Feedback & Coaching
Drawbacks
Ideas can get lost
Notations need to be reminded
Limited ideas
Synchronous for virtual groups project from anywhere in the world (even 3am if ur in a different timezone is a bit of a challenge!)
(I like the idea of EXAM PREP - 1 hour allocation for questions where you WILL be available)
Asynchronous - engagement outside of class, prep for the next day and JUST-IN-TIME quiz (me like it too)
The Privacy - PROTECT MY TWEETS is very good and I was not aware of this - allows me to have a TWITTER that is available to my class ONLY. Disable location

FACEBOOK
2/6 FACEBOOK
www.facebook.com Definition - Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them.
Firstly, I use FB and enjoy it in my personal life… but I tend NOT to use FACEBOOK at school because it is too open for my style of pedagogy. I would definitely use EDMODO as this is a closed network. My own experience is that let Facebook be their own personal domain and let a closed social network be for education.
Have posted this on the FB page… (with a typo!)

GOOGLE+
3/6 GOOGLE+
This one is interesting to me because I have not used it before so this is a new learning experience…
Definition Google+ is a social networking and identity service that is owned and operated by Google Inc. Google has described Google+ as a "social layer" that enhances many of its online properties, and that it is not simply a social networking website…
What I do NOT know... YET!
CONNECTION between all layers of social media (13+ age)
Privacy is very specific about who can see what
Style - collection of tools to interact with a community focus
Pace - is dictated by the tool that you are using
Great for…
Sites that needs multiple tools
Integrated actives and resources
Community based experiences
Flexible permissions on who contributes where and when
Specifically they have APPS for EDUCATION - not blocked by many schools
Not so Great for…
It is not as popular (timing could be the reason)
Require profile management across multiple tools - i.e. my YOUTUBE is under a different connection to my Facebook etc
Asynchronous
Portfolios (pages)
Collaborative Activities (communities)
Group Project Management
Q&A's
Synchronous
Google Hangouts for guest speakers
Virtual Classes
I joined the Community and I am pleased to have seen that I was not the only person who has not done so previous to this experience.. clicks on 'like'!

PINTEREST
4/6 PINTEREST
This is one I like VERY much as it panders to my creative side… (tee hee)
www.pinterest.com Definition-A content sharing service that allows members to "pin" images, videos and other objects to their inboard.
(LOL - I just started the video and Melissa said exactly the same thing about PINTEREST being a bit of a favourite too..)
It makes you THINK ABOUT CREATIVE ACTIVITIES
Great for
Visual Collections and Visual Learners
Aggregating Resources
Annotating with concepts, ideas and interests
Not so Great for
Not about writing
Limited in Secret Boards
Students are not using PINTEREST - due to lack of exposure…. (one student told me it is for middle-aged women who do patchwork quilts!) hmmmm… I do not fit into that category but I certainly see benefits to my teaching role.
(can you use PINTEREST with those who are younger than 13 if you are doing a class activity?)
Asynchronous
Visual-based projects
Digital Literacy and Curating
Visual expression of ideas
Collavorative Collection of Resources
Synchronous
Brainstorming activities
Collaborative collection of resources
I went into PINTEREST and I searched for Emerging Trends & Technologies MOOC but it must be private as nothing in showing in the search (tweeted this and will await to see how fast I get a reply!) lol.
