Week 3 Emerging Technologies in the Virtual Classroom
GAMIFICATION
Introduction to Game-Based Learning
Objectives
Reflect on the evolution of digital game-based learning in education
Begin exploring how we can implement game-based approaches in virtual settings
History - We have been using games for a long time in Education - Today, we have digital technology that is allowing new formats of games.
1974 - PONG!
GAMIFICATION
Gamification is the use of game thinking and game mechanics in non-game contexts to engage users in solving problems. Gamification is used in applications and processes to improve user engagement, return on investment, data quality, timeliness, and learning.

Interactivity (Maslow)
Engagement (remember engagement is max 20 mins)
Rewards ( at each level, positive reinforcement encourages continuation of learning - (Skinner/Pavlov)
Creativity (Montessori)
Skill Development (learning how to fly is the example here) (Blooms Taxonomy)
Challenges -
Find appropriate games (remember $)
Time Factor (either your own creation or tailoring the purchased game)
TIME of the game itself (if the game takes hours & hours to play it may tip over to where it is not conducive to learning)
Resources - Web Access, access to technology etc
External Support (You need to get the buy-in by all members of the school community)
Applying Game Based Learning
Further explore how we can implement GB approaches in Virtual Education
Identify resources for developing GB actives in virtual education - check out resource sheet!
Games & Serious Games
Games - Interactive Experience - traditional WIN or LOOSE
Serious Games - Interactive Experience - model real life activities (lots of research being done around these in education.
Types of Games
Online Games
Apps
DIY - creating your own game
Online - Minecraft - allows students to build and construct things - 10 different lessons in Minecraft (on wikispace)
Apps - BrainPop - quizzes and concepts, The Play - helps student understand Shakespeare (YAY! :-))
DIY - Gamestar Mechanic - where students create their own game
Gamifying - Individual & Team

Badging
The role of badging in virtual class
Commendable kids is a website that allows students to earn badges www.commendablekids.com - from their website… 'Commendable Kids allows parents, teachers, and anyone interested in encouraging children, to register a child and award them badges for their hard work, milestones, skill developments and other accomplishments. You can also invite family and friends to support the child so they can leave comments of encouragement and even give them high fives! Kids love it and are motivated to set and work toward personal goals.'

(get the virtual certificate from Coursera as it links to LINKEDIN)
History
'Patches' in Boy/Girl Scout Movement
Badge of Honour for serious gamers
Achievements in video games
Social Media (Edmodo Badges - i.e. I have 10 teacher connections)
Mozilla Open Badges (never heard of it!) (integrated into LMS and open learning systems)
WHY?
Social recognition and accomplishment
Skill-Based
Levelled - encourage progression
Collectable i.e., stamp collections
It can be simply fun & engagement
HOW EXCITING I AM GETTING A BADGE - ( I really am so happy I did this course!!!!!!)
Badges can be a way to provide an authenticity of building SKILLS from KNOWLEDGE … I LIKE! :-)
I think we put the HIGH SCHOOL CERTIFICATE etc, at a level that is often lost on students because they see little reward in semester reports… if there is something that is more streamlined to the achievement of HSC - it may engage students much better… (just a thought)
Augmented Reality & QR Codes
Explore Augmented Reality and QR Codes (briefly) and possibly come up with ideas that how we can use it.
Augmented Reality
Using AURASMA is something I have done in class and can bring content and context of something that is around you… (add example to your weekly for other students to witness)
Have a go at Google Glass - Google SkyMap, Augment, String, Fetch
Science, Art History and Mathematics
Great with Field Trips
QR CODES
These unlock content - (activities & content)
Must have mobile devices
